According to mythology, this earth is balanced on the hood of Ananta Snake. The earth needs to be balanced in every way. People should not be poisoned from animals. Kala Sarpa Dosha and Rahu-Ketu Doshas should be neutralized. For these reasons, Naga Panchami is celebrated.
This time Naga Chaturthi and Panchami came on the same day. In Karnataka, silver snakes are placed on Shiva Linga and worshipped. Snake families – Nag, Nagin and their children – made in silver, copper or brass are also worshipped. Water, milk and Panchamruta are used to worship these snakes in a similar way as Lord Shiva is worshipped. Turmeric and sandalwood powder are very important for Naga Worship.
Highly fragrant flowers are used in the worship. Kevda and Henna flowers are very auspicious for Naga Worship. We apply wet limestone powder in the form of an elongated rectangle on both the sides of the main door. Using turmeric paste in rose water, snake pairs are drawn on this rectangle. This has Vastu significance in that they neutralize Rahu-Ketu Doshas. Other than this, it keeps malignant viruses at bay. We would always perform this pooja in the above manner.
But, this time a very important incident happened, when we were performing pooja inside our home. Mom was reciting Nava Naga Stotra, Sarpa Stotra, Sarpa Gayatri and Rahu-Ketu Mantra inside our home. All through the time she was reciting these, our esteemed neighbor was chanting cuss words for sister, mother, etc. The reason? Dad had gone to 3 homes in the building and sprinkled Kum Kum on their doors! As if we do not have any other work to do!
The Kum Kum that was on the door was made of chemicals. The color of the substance made that evident. And we use naturally made Kum Kum at our home. That is the difference between educated and uneducated people. The chemical Kum Kum used to be applied on the forehead and parting of hair by village women in olden days. This was because they got married at around 13 years of age. Life used to be difficult then. Men would die early. Widowhood was difficult to lead. That is why the women would purposely apply this chemical so that the chemical would work as slow poison for them and they would die before their husband did. A myth had been created for the benefit of the people.
Coming to the door, according to spirituality it is the dwelling place of Lakshmi, Saraswati and Mahakali. One should not kick it. Some years back the teacher living in our building kicked our door when we were performing pooja inside. During this year’s Naga Panchami, our esteemed neighbor created a hullaballoo that we performed black magic and threw the Kum Kum on their doors. Later, Our Lady of Intolerance claimed that she and her husband had ruined our Naga Panchami Pooja.
It is a fact that they have been performing black magic and throwing ash, rice, etc. on our doorstep and inside our house when we were not in (getting inside locked doors comes easy to this woman). This time they wanted to save themselves from our blaming them that it is, actually, they, who are performing the black magic. We have taken the photo of our neighbor’s door with the Kum Kum. We sent the picture to Mom’s spiritual Guru. She told us nothing should be sprinkled on the middle portion of the door or threshold. She also told us that it has to be the mischief of any one of the 3 on whose doors the chemical Kum Kum was found. Though it will take time, God will definitely punish them. This incident shows that the peak time of Kaliyuga is coming. But, in any yuga Satyameva Jayate (Truth only wins).
