The Amnesiac! (Part VI)

I wrote this story, The Amnesiac! (Part VI), in the 1990s for an educational course, I was taking then. Here’s the updated story.

The Amnesiac! (Part VI)

“Thanks, Vishwa. How long have you been here?”

“About 3 days, why?”

“Heard anything about the Sethi Estate, the estate adjoining this resort?” she waved her hand in that direction.

“Yeah. Suspicious things are happening there. Yesterday, I was passing near the compound wall, there when I heard somebody screaming and then a sound like some large thing had caught fire! What could it be?”

“I don’t know. But I sure like to find out.”

“I want you to tell me what are you working on.”

“No, I can’t…,” she hesitated. Then, she revealed, “Ok. Some days back an equipment was stolen from the army base at Kalina, Mumbai.”

“And the equipment emits radiation?”

“Yeah, when Mr. Arora, the resort owner told us about the mysterious happenings here, I figured…”

“So, you figured that Mr. Sethi had the equipment. You could very well have informed the police and asked them to storm the place.”

“The police got involved since my senior, Aakash was found in a state of amnesia yesterday. Keshav is a Senior Inspector.”

“I should have guessed it. Why don’t you ask Keshav to get a search warrant to find out if the equipment is inside?”

“Well, actually,” Radha revealed gleefully. “Keshav does not know the radiation thing! Besides, Mr. Iyer wanted us to get more concrete evidence before any offensive action is taken.”

“You need my help anytime, I am here,” he said, giving her his room number, which turned out to be on the same floor.

Radha walked thoughtfully towards her room. Could it be true that the equipment was at the Sethi mansion? Or could something else be there that needed to be detected? Whatever it was, it was up to her…

“Ahh…” A blood-curdling scream rang out!
