The Hospital That Refused to Treat – Chapter 39
Chapter 39: The White Van
Joseph tried calling Ganpat again.
No answer.
“Should we go to the hospital?” Shalini asked.
“No,” Joseph said. “That’s exactly what we shouldn’t do.”
He enlarged the photograph once more.
The word CARE remained visible on the vehicle door.
Prakash stared at it.
“If Ganpat has seen the van before, someone else may have too.”
Joseph nodded.
“The tea stall.”
The following morning, Prakash visited the stall alone. The three had agreed it would be safer not to appear together near the hospital.
He showed the photograph to the owner without mentioning where it had come from.
“Recognise this van?”
The man squinted at the screen.
“Maybe.”
“Think carefully.”
“I’ve seen a white van like this late at night.”
“Where?”
“Near the hospital’s rear gate.”
“Do you know who owns it?”
The stall owner shook his head.
Then an auto-rickshaw driver drinking tea nearby interrupted.
“I know that logo.”
Prakash turned.
“What logo?”
The driver pointed at the faint lettering.
“Silver Care.”
“What’s that?”
“Some kind of patient transport service. I’ve seen their vans near nursing homes.”
Prakash’s pulse quickened.
“Where are they based?”
The driver thought for a moment.
“Somewhere in the eastern suburbs.”
Back at Joseph’s apartment, they searched for Silver Care.
There was no proper website.
No office address.
Only an old business listing with a telephone number.
Joseph called.
A recorded message announced that the number was no longer in service.
“Perhaps the company closed,” Shalini said.
“Perhaps,” Joseph replied.
Prakash was still examining the photograph.
Suddenly, he frowned.
“There’s something else.”
Near the rear light was the faint outline of a sticker.
Joseph enlarged it.
The words were blurred, but one line was readable.
MEDICAL TRANSPORT ONLY
Shalini looked at the covered figure on the stretcher.
“If they transport patients,” she said, “why bring someone secretly through an abandoned entrance at two in the morning?”
Nobody had an answer.
Then Joseph’s phone rang.
It was Ganpat.
“I found out where the van goes,” he whispered.
